In their shoes: Understanding more about the asylum process

We’re offering an interactive workshop promoting understanding of the asylum process and how it might feel to be a refugee.

How it works

It’s card game based session looks at some of the situations and experiences for refugees as they leave their home country and travel to the UK. The game goes through some typical stages of the asylum process with each participant being given a character to take along the journey and discussion about each stage.

The aim of the session is for the participants to gain an appreciation of what it might be like to go through this process to foster greater understanding between different groups in our communities.

It can also provide a basis discuss themes such as:

  • Why people have to seek refuge
  • What it might mean to leave your home country
  • The uncertainty of the process
  • Press coverage of refugees and asylum seekers
  • Myth busting
  • The work of the charitable sector in this area

The direction of discussions can be lead by the participants or a particular focus can be agreed in advance. The content and level of detail is able to be adjusted to be age appropriate.

We encourage the talk to be open and both negative and positive views to be discussed.
